Happy Monday everyone!  I hope you had wonderful holiday celebrations!

Today’s Madison’s Playlist I’d like to dedicate not just to a song, but to an amazing artist, who on 7th April 2015 would celebrate her 100th birthday – Billie Holiday!  She became one of the most influential singers of all time, and her music is and will always be, a source of endless inspiration.

Wynton Marsalis, a trumpeter, composer, teacher, music educator, and Artistic Director at Jazz at Lincoln center, spoke with LIFE to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Holiday’s birth.  In the video below, he discusses her rhythmic sensibility, why it’s a mistake to attribute the quality of her voice to the hardship of her life and how she came to be recognized as one of the greatest voices in the history of jazz.  If you’re nearby (or if you’d like to follow it online), you can attend Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Billie Holiday Festival between April 9-12. Go to for event and live webcast information.

You can listen to many of her songs here, and read her memoirs Lady Sings the Blues here.

Happy birthday Billie Holliday!
